Emergency Backup Generation

Open Transition Backup Generator

An Open Transition backup generator is one that is never connected in parallel to the utility grid and is most common for residential and small commercial/industrial customers. Prior to generating electricity, a transfer switch must disconnect the service from the grid, and similarly, when returning supply to the grid; this will result in a small outage when transferring to and from the generator supply.

Customers should contact a licensed electrical contractor to understand which backup generator is right for them. All installations must comply with ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) requirements and be installed by a licensed electrical contractor.

Please visit ESA’s website for further information regarding backup generators.

Closed Transition Backup Generator

A Closed Transition backup generator is capable of being safely connected to the utility grid for a very short period of time to avoid an outage when transferring from the generator supply back to the utility supply. These types of generators are more common for larger industrial facilities or sensitive customers (i.e. hospitals) and are accompanied by sophisticated transfer switches and control.

Customers should contact a licensed electrical contractor to understand which backup generator is right for them. All installations must comply with ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) requirements and be installed by a licensed electrical contractor.

Customers must also contact ERTH Power at generation@erthpower.com, to understand additional requirements as required by the utility for a closed transition generator.
