Power Outages

Report a Power Outage

To report a power outage within the ERTH Power service territory, please call 1-877-850-3128 and we will send our service team to investigate.

Outage Map

ERTH Power maintains an interactive power outage map to inform customers of planned and unplanned outages affecting our service territory. Please note that our outage map is updated during regular business hours and during major outages.

Planned Outages

Planned power outages are sometimes necessary to perform critical maintenance, repairs or infrastructure upgrades. This work helps to improve the safety and reliability of the electricity distribution system. If a planned outage is necessary, our operations team carefully schedules the outage to minimize the disruption to residents and businesses (usually during the early hours of the morning when most people are sleeping).

Before a scheduled planned outage takes place, we make sure to notify all affected customers. We also contact facilities or businesses that may be particularly impacted by the outage, such as hospitals, long-term care homes, factories and grocery stores

Unplanned Outages

Unplanned power outages can occur at any time for a number of reasons, such as adverse weather conditions, construction damage, fallen trees, traffic accidents, equipment failure, or loss of supply. ERTH Power systems and protocols are in place to ensure that unplanned outages are minimal. If an unplanned power outage occurs, our experienced team of line workers is dispatched to investigate and restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

Preparing for Power Outages

  • Build an emergency kit – Keep an emergency kit in your home filled with flashlights, batteries, candles, matches, wireless radio, and warm blankets.
  • Have food and water on hand – keep a small supply of bottled water and dry snacks in the event of a prolonged outage.
  • Keep a contact list – Have emergency phone numbers as well as ERTH Power’s telephone number written down for easy access.
  • Protect electronics – Use a power bar with a surge protector for sensitive electronics or appliances, such as televisions and computers.
  • Determine the extent of the outage – Before calling ERTH Power, check to see if your neighbours are experiencing the outage or if it is just affecting your home. If your neighbors have power, inspect your home’s electrical panel or fuse box.
  • Report an outage – If it appears that your neighborhood is experiencing an outage, contact ERTH Power toll-free at 1-877-850-3128 to report it and we will send our service team to investigate.
  • Stay connected – Check the ERTH Power Outage Map and follow ERTH Power on Twitter and Facebook for outage updates as they become available.
  • Avoid opening fridge and freezer doors – Avoid opening the fridge and freezer doors as much as possible to prevent food from spoiling. Most food will remain frozen for up to 36 hours in a closed freezer.
  • Turn off and unplug – Immediately turn off and unplug appliances and electronics in your home. You can keep one light on inside or outside of your home to alert you when the power has been restored.
  • Do not use charcoal or gas appliances and equipment – Charcoal and gas produce carbon monoxide when heated or burned, which can be harmful or fatal to you and your family.
  • Check for spoiled food – Consuming spoiled food can cause severe illness. After an outage, it is critical to assess the food in your fridge and freezer for signs of spoilage. Most food will remain frozen if it has been in a closed freezer for no more than 36 hours; however, as food defrosts, it will need to be cooked or discarded. When in doubt, throw it out!
  • Use caution when plugging in appliances and electronics – Sometimes, it takes the distribution a little while to stabilize after an outage. Use caution and gradually plug in or turn on appliances one by one. Check electrical outlets, switch boxes or fuse-breaker panels for exposure to water. If they appear to be wet, do not plug in or use them until they have been inspected.
  • Replenish your emergency kit – If you used supplies from your emergency kit, don’t forget to replenish them in case of a future outage or emergency.
  • Reset clocks – Make sure to reset clocks throughout your home when the power comes back on.

Major Outages

When a major event occurs in our service territory, ERTH Power compiles a report which is submitted to our regulator, the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) within 60 days of the occurrence. These reports detail ERTH Power’s response to the major event.
